Napoleon proclaimed of champagne "in victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it". Sir Winston Churchill seemed to be very partial to champagne and also routinely repeated Napoleon's well-known words. Churchill was in fact very specific in his personal choice of champagne, being entirely faithful to the produce of Pol Roger on the whole as well as their famous 1928 vintage in particular.
The days of brand name positioning through famous customers is usually thought to be a reasonably recent thing, although Pol Roger firmly grasped the marketing potential long ago of association with its most well-known client. Odette Pol-Roger was a great friend of Churchill and each year on his birthday she sent him a champagne present, in the form of a case of his favourite 1928 vintage, while stocks lasted! Churchill described Odette Pol-Roger's home at 44 Avenue de Champagne, Epernay as 'the world's most drinkable address' and his association with Pol-Roger was certainly a great endorsement. Pol Roger is even claimed to have created champagne in a pint bottle solely for Winston Churchill. To this day Pol Roger still offer Sir Winston Churchill label champagne. |
